Rabbit & Floral Honeycomb Lattice Panel

This lattice window panel from Yunan province dates to the late 19th century and likely originated in an official building or courtyard home. At once decorative and functional, the openwork design is intended to allow light and air into a room while still maintaining privacy. Rather than traditional latticework, this window panel is an example of pierced, openwork carving, done in a geometric honeycomb pattern. Each individual hexagon frames a large flower blossom, with a crouched rabbit in the very center. We love the interplay of light and shadow created when the panel is hung as a window or room divider.
