A hallmark of Qing-dynasty domestic architecture, hand-carved lattice panels such as these were used in courtyard homes to allow light and air into a room while maintaining privacy. This pair of courtyard doors feature simply carved geometric scrollwork and large lattice panels patterned with vertical ovals, reminiscent of a chain-link design. Tucked between each oval is a carved four-petal flower, possibly depicting forsythia or dogwood blossoms. Darkened to a rich brown color, these lattice doors look fantastic in the modern home as closet doors, room dividers, or a wall-mounted sculpture.
