A hallmark of Qing-dynasty domestic architecture, tall lattice panels such as these were used in provincial courtyard homes to allow light and air into a room whilst maintaining privacy. This set of four courtyard door panels goes beyond the purely functional with intricate pierced carvings and expansive lattice windows. The decorative carvings flanking the latticework depict archaistic dragons amidst swirling clouds, a classic motif of power and good fortune. Crafted of northern elm (yumu), the wooden panels have a beautifully aged finish, with warm brown coloring and smooth patina from a century of use.

From the collection of Frances and Gary Comer.

The four panels are separate and are not linked with hinges. Hinges can be installed upon request to form a free-standing folding screen.
