In traditional Chinese architecture, classic timber framework buildings were often enhanced by elaborate finishes and finely carved embellishments - such as this 19th-century elmwood valance. The valance is hand-carved in relief with pierced elements and depicts a lively town or palace setting. Guided by banner-waving attendants, four officials ride horseback through a landscape dotted with ornate architecture and low, latticed walls. Boughs of pine and branches of plum blossoms hang over the scene, symbols of winter, endurance, and longevity. The valance is darkened by a deep burgundy lacquer finish, now richly worn with time.
