This drum form pedestal was carved from a single block of white marble by Qing-dynasty artisans in the mid-19th century. Ringing both its top and bottom, an etched pattern of nail heads imitates those used to stretch a skin on an actual drum. At the pedestal's center is a lively scene of a phoenix midflight above a flowering peony blossom, set in low relief within a simple medallion form. A scene of tender affection, the phoenix here represents a lover, while the peony represents its beloved. Extolling the virtues of love and benevolence, this hand-carved display stand is the perfect way to elevate a plant or precious item, indoors or out.
