Cast in brass with a rich patina, this seated figure is a Lama, a spiritual master and teacher of the Dharma in Tibetan Buddhism. The figure likely depicts Lama Tsongkapa (1357-1419), a Tibetan philosopher and founder of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. The Lama is seated upon a double lotus plinth in diamond position, draped in monk's robes and wearing the pointed yellow hat of the Gelug tradition. He holds his hands in the dharmachakra mudra, the Gesture of Teaching, a symbol for setting the Dharma wheel in motion through enlightened knowledge. An expression of wisdom and guidance, this serene figure emanates calm and encourages focused concentration.
