This 18th-century display stand was carved from a single block of white marble to resemble an open scroll turned upside down. The elegant form needs little decoration - the sides alone are etched with a pattern of swirling clouds, symbols of harmony and the celestial realm. A low stand such as this would have been placed upon a table as a display mount for a precious object or lingbi stone. Exemplifying the restraint of Ming-dynasty design, this stand would have undoubtedly appealed to esoteric tastes and likely took pride of place in the scholars' studio.
