With vases in hand and cheerful expressions, these porcelain figures bear strong resemblance to the laughing Hehe Erxian twins, the Twin Immortals of Harmony and Mirth. However, the maker likely borrowed their familiar forms to depict the Golden Boy (Jintong) and Jade Girl (Yunu), mythical aids to the Jade Emperor, believed to protect homes and temples and serve as guides to the underworld. Omens of good fortune, many households put the Golden Boy and Jade Girl on their front doors during the Spring Festival to beckon good fortune for the coming year. The pair is decorated with pastel overglaze enamels in the famille rose style and stand upon square plinths patterned with auspicious imagery, including phoenix medallions, peaches, peonies, and golden coins.

From the collection of Frances and Gary Comer.
