Hand-carved from reclaimed wood, this rustic koi sculpture recreates early 20th-century Chinese folk art designs. The fish is carved with a squat, rounded body and finished with colorful pigments in white, yellow, red and blue. Common motifs in Chinese art, fish are emblems of harmony, wealth, and luck, and Buddhist symbols of "freedom from all restraints." Finished with a weathered texture, this provincial koi looks wonderful on a bookcase or console as a tabletop sculpture.

Lucky in Love

Because fish are reputed to swim in pairs, they symbolize the joys of union and a harmonious marriage. When two fish are shown together, they convey the idiom “may you be blessed with marital bliss and an abundance of good luck.”
