This unusual rectangular tray was originally used as a mortar for grinding and removing the husks of cereal grains. The multiple recesses provided a convenient way to prepare and store multiple grains and spices for a meal. The tray's trough-like form and richly aged texture bring a rustic charm to the home as a planter, vide poche, or centerpiece.
