This early 20th-century porcelain stacking box would have been used in a woman's personal chambers to store jewelry and other precious small objects. The large round box has four tiers, each decorated in the famille rose style, with pastel overglaze enamels against white underglaze. The sides and lid are decorated with a repeated motif of a deer, crane, and Chinese parasol tree, a visual idiom that "spring has come to every corner of the universe." A popular theme for birthday or wedding gifts, the deer and crane together can also symbolize a long, happy marriage.
