Drawing on the traditional baluster jar form, this modern-age vase from circa 1920 exhibits the sinuous lines and gilded refinement that helped to define the Art Deco style of Shanghai and Tianjin in the early 20th century. Glazed rich persimmon, the jar is painted with cranes and pine branches, symbols of longevity, all beautifully rendered in gold linework.
