Yumu Scroll Pot

Set alongside the four treasures of the study - the calligraphy brush, ink, paper, and inkstone - a brush pot or scroll holder was a fixture on every traditional scholars' desk. Once used to hold calligraphy scrolls, this late-19th century scroll pot was shaped from a single block of northern elmwood (yumu) with a beautifully grained surface. The irregular texture of the wood is visible at the pot's raw edge and at an opening in the base. Popular during the Qing dynasty (1644–1911), simple pots such as this were revered for their organic appearance, bringing to mind the romantic notion of an artist-scholar living amidst nature.
