Beautifully commemorated on this oval ginger jar, censers have been used for thousands of years in Chinese culture as a part of funeral rites or prayer offerings. Filled with dried aromatic plants and essential oils, the censer issued fragrant smoke that forged a connection to the spiritual realm. This late Qing-dynasty jar pays colorful tribute to the ancient vessel form in style of famille rose enamelware. Sometimes referred to as "yangcai" or "foreign colors," the famille rose style emerged during the 18th century and employs a pastel palette of opaque overglaze enamels that favors roses and pinks. With its intricate decoration and fanciful coloring, this famille rose baluster jar is a delightful way to brighten up any interior.

From the collection of Frances and Gary Comer.

Jar has minor chips to rim and knob of lid.

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
