A dark blue-black glaze coats the body of this small kitchen jar, sheeting down the sides and pooling at the sharp angle drawn by its high shoulders. The glazed vessel dates to the early 20th-century and was used for storing food and condiments in a provincial Qing-dynasty kitchen, as evidenced by its interior glaze. This kitchen jar has a cylindrical form, shaped with angular shoulders, two small strap handles, and a rounded lip at the opening. The dark glaze has a glossy finish, thinning at the lip and strap handles to reveal the underlying terracotta form.
