As evidenced by the interior glaze, this stoneware vessel was once used in a provincial Qing-dynasty kitchen for storing or fermenting food and condiments. Dated to the late 19th century, this modest chinese kitchen jar has a slightly tapered form with rounded shoulders, two small strap handles, and a constricted, straight sided neck. The rich, dark brown glaze has an opaque sheen that dances in the light and slight crazing. Speckled with firing imperfections, this kitchen pot exemplifies the timeless appeal of handcrafted pottery.
