This low ceramic planter dates to the early 20th century and features a wide opening, flat rim, and six gently curving sides. The basin is patterned in low relief with bands of scrollwork and round medallions of flowers, birds, and offering fruits. Contrasted by areas of unglazed clay, the low relief decoration is colored by glossy blue, green, and white glazes. Due to movement of the glaze during firing, the glazed finish drips and pools across the surface, lending the planter a charming asymmetry and wabi sabi appeal. With a hole in the base for drainage, the planter can be filled with lush greenery or striking floral arrangements, a wonderful addition to any garden.

From the collection of Frances and Gary Comer.
