This large stoneware vessel is a Qing-dynasty wine jar, used to store wine and spirits made from rice and other grains. The large vessel would have been sculpted by hand, and bears traces of the maker’s hand in its irregular surface. The subtle ridged texture at the bottom reveals its coiled construction while the faceted surface at the top reveals how the shoulders were shaped with a paddle. A dark brown glaze pools and drips down the vessel’s sculptural form, lingering beautifully on every imperfection.
