Carved from a single block of granite, this stone vessel is an early 19th century mortar once used in a Chinese kitchen to grind spices, herbs, and other condiments. The small mortar boasts a range of textures - from jagged stone at the base to orderly chisel marks at the rim to a smooth, concave interior, well worn from years of use. Today, the rustic stone mortar layers into modern interiors as a tabletop planter, salt cellar or sculptural object.
