Smoky Agate Baluster Snuff Bottle

A mixture of finely powdered tobacco, herbs, and spices, snuff was introduced to China in the 17th century by Western diplomats. Initially reserved for ranking members of Qing-dynasty society, the practice provided an opportunity to display one's refined aesthetic through collectible snuff containers.

This early 20th century snuff bottle is made of smoky, dark agate, smoothed to an oblong form with a constrained neck and a short, footed base. Like the traditional baluster jar, imitation handles are carved in relief on the rounded shoulders, each a mythical fu lion with a curly mane. A domed malachite cap contrasts the dark stone with green color, complete with a carved bone snuff spoon.
