An opaque espresso brown glaze coats the body of this small early 20th-century kitchen jar. As evidenced by the glazed interior, the jar was once used daily in a Qing-dynasty kitchen for fermenting or storing foods and condiments. The wide-mouth jar has a cylindrical form with angular shoulders, two small strap handles, and a rounded, unglazed lip at the opening. The dark brown glaze has a subtle sheen rather than a high shine and is textured by the banded surface of the vessel.
