A thick, light brown glaze coats the stout body of this early 20th-century terra cotta kitchen jar. As evidenced by the glazed interior, this wide-mouth jar was once used daily in a provincial Chinese kitchen for fermenting foods and condiments. The kitchen jar has a slightly tapered form with rounded shoulders, a rounded rim and is flanked by two small strap handles. Thinning just short of the base, the glaze has a thick, opaque finish and is smooth to the touch, textured only slightly by the banded surface of the ceramic form and slight blistering from firing imperfections.
