This Meiji-period petite box exemplifies Japanese refinement in all crafts. Fashioned of silver with a hardwood interior, the small box has a clean-lined rectangular form with rounded corners and a thin lip where the lid meets the base. The lid is etched with tall grasses swaying before a full moon, a motif that represents the Japanese moon-viewing festival Tsukimi. A celebration of end-of-season harvests, Tsukimi is observed by gathering with loved ones beneath the harvest moon, surrounded by pampas grass and offerings of dango (rice dumplings). Simple yet effective, the tranquil scene is expertly conveyed through just a few graceful lines. Though lightly aged by an antique patina, the silver casing retains a soft metallic sheen, contrasted by a beautifully dark hardwood lining the interior.

Artisan maker's mark and "Pure Silver" mark stamped on silver foot rim.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
