A decorative technique first adopted in China in the early Ming dynasty (1368-1644), cloisonné is achieved by outlining intricate patterns with thin strips of metal, which are then filled with colorful materials such as vitreous enamel, cut glass or gemstones.

This colorful example of Chinese cloisonné depicts a large koi fish leaping out of the water, rendered in a bold palette of red, black, blue, and green. Gilt metalwork traces the outline of each scale and decorates the fins and barbels with a metallic glimmer. The cloisonné koi is elevated by a round, wooden base carved in relief with crashing waves. A 20th-century example of a traditional craft, this petite owl adds a welcome pop of color to styled bookshelves or table arrangements.

Split to wooden base on one side.
