A mixture of finely powdered tobacco, herbs, and spices, snuff was introduced to China in the 17th century by Western diplomats. Initially reserved for ranking members of Qing-dynasty society, the practice provided an opportunity to display one's refined aesthetic through collectible snuff containers.

This early 20th century snuff bottle from Mongolia or northern China is unusual for the gilt and bejeweled metalwork enclosing the stone bottle. The sides of the bottle are decorated with cross-sections of banded agate, selected for its beautiful patterning of pale grey and white strata. A brass surround comprises the neck, shoulders and base, studded with small beads of turquoise, carnelian and glass. Like the traditional baluster jar, imitation handles adorn the shoulders, each shaped as a mythical fu lion guardian.
