These hand-carved wooden pillars were once used to elevate burning incense in a shrine or altar display. An essential element of ritual prayer, incense is burned as a form of offering and to measure the duration of the ritual process. These incense stands are carved on one side with Old Chinese script and with a celestial dragon and phoenix on the other three. Auspicious creatures that symbolize power and good fortune, the dragon and phoenix together form an emblem of love and bliss. At the top of each column is a metal dish to protect the wood from burning incense or candles. Finished with red lacquer and gold paint, these unique incense stands bring celebratory color and storied history to the modern home.
