This petite pinewood vessel is an early 20th century mortar once used daily in a provincial kitchen to grind herbs, spices, and condiments. The rustic container was hand-turned to an hourglass form and has a simple pattern of incised and raised horizontal bands. Aged with weathered texture and a rich patina, the mortar is ideal today as a tabletop planter, vase or pen holder.
