Round Birdcage with Bone Charms

This barrel-form birdcage dates to the late 19th century and is carefully assembled of thin bamboo rods fitted to a round bamboo base with a glass top. The cage hangs from a large brass hook attached to the top, embellished with ivory carvings. Two bamboo posts stretch across the birdcage providing a place to perch for a feathered friend.

Mounted on the sides are two blue-and-white glazed porcelain cups for water and birdseed. The cage is complete with several ivory accessories, including quatrefoil and square carvings as well as a male figure depicting Li Tieguai, one of the Eight Immortals who commonly appears as a lame beggar and often associated with medicine.
