This early 20th century coffer from Mongolia was painted by hand with auspicious fruits and blessings, likely as part of a bride's dowry. Wishes painted on the pomegranates, peaches and citrons, symbols of eternity, fertility and buddha's gentle watch, express hope for a long and happy marriage, healthy children, wisdom and eternal happiness. The goldenrod finish is an unusual color for furniture of the era and was likely commissioned specifically for the recipient family.
