During the 18th century, Europeans provided an eager market for Chinese export porcelain, especially the colorful and fanciful ware known as “famille rose.” Named for a palette of opaque overglaze enamels that favored roses and pinks, famille rose porcelain ware was crafted with the same technical virtuosity as imperial porcelain but designed for Western tastes.

This pair of porcelain fish bowls is a charming example of famille rose ware, decorated with an all-over pattern of peaches and leaves. One of the most popular motifs in Chinese decorative art, the peach is an emblem of immortality and the symbol of the God of Longevity. Once used tabletop to house a small ornamental fish, these bowls add bright color to modern interiors as planters or catch-all dishes.
