This ginger jar dates to the early 20th century and features rounded sides and high shoulders that curve in towards a narrow mouth. Painted with expressive brushwork in a palette of pinks, blues, and greens, the jar is festooned with peony blossoms, emblems of spring time and feminine beauty. A red bird sits perched amid the flowers and hand-painted characters decorate the jar's opposite side. The opening is covered by a domed lid painted with additional characters and topped by a teardrop-shaped knob.
