When the Art Deco movement reached major Chinese cities like Tianjin and Shanghai, the design aesthetic that emerged was the perfect intersection of European modernism and Ming-dynasty refinement. This oval stool is a product of the era, crafted in turn-of-the-century Shanghai with simple geometries and supple, flowing lines. Minimally decorated to highlight the natural beauty of its blackwood (hongmu) construction, the stool features four legs ending in rounded hoofed feet and curved humpback stretchers. A beautiful example of Shanghai Deco design, this stool owes its timeless look to rich materials and simple forms.
