This low wooden stool has a wonderful, imaginative form, carved in a style attributed to the Senufo people of West Africa. While maintaining the classic stature of traditional Senufo stools, this example radically shifts the form. The solid sides and stout handles are unusual and not frequently found in other styles. By chip carving rows as a decorative motif, the artisan counters this solid appearance with fantastic texture that brings to mind a coiled rope. Abstract antelopes protect each end. The concave seat adds further movement to this very sculptural object.
