Low Kang Table

During winter in the colder provinces of China, life revolved around the kang, a heated brick platform that household members would sit or recline upon. Placed on top of the kang, low tables provided a convenient surface for dining, drinking tea, or playing games.

This provincial kang table dates to the early 19th century and follows all the conventions of classical Chinese furniture design. The table is crafted with mortise-and-tenon joinery and features a waisted apron, floating-panel top, and four corner legs linked by humpback stretchers with stabilizing vertical posts. Minimally decorated, the table has a simple silhouette accented only by a finely beaded edge that outlines the legs and stretchers. The finish has developed fantastic character from centuries of use, speckled with imperfections and smoothed by a richly aged texture that only time can achieve.
