Like many pieces of traditional African metalwork, this sculptural double bell served multiple purposes within the Bamileke communities of Cameroon. They were status symbols, ceremonial instruments, and currency pieces used in rare and significant exchanges. During religious ceremonies, a member of the tribal elite would hold the gongs by the shared handle and beat them with rubber-coated mallets. A simple band of forged metal connects the two bells, adding sweeping height that pulls the eye across its sculptural lines and acoustical curves.
