Pair of Petite Red Lacquer Square Stools

Stools have been a favored form of seating in Chinese culture for centuries. Found in a variety of materials and forms, the stool transcends class lines, as much at home in the provincial courtyard as it is in the grand hall of a wealthy estate.

This style of low square stool is known as a fang deng, and doubles as a low table for displaying objects or serving tea. Crafted with mortise-and-tenon joinery, without the use of nails or screws, these square-corner stools feature floating-panel tops, straight legs ending in hoofed feet, inset side panels, and single drawers for stowing odds and ends. The pair is left undecorated save for the bright red cinnabar lacquer finish, now beautifully worn from over a century of use.
