Along with paper, ink, and inkstone, the brush is one of the Four Treasures of the scholar’s studio. Arguably the most important tool, the brush served as a direct link to the artist’s creative spirit. Polished stacked stone beads in a shade of luminous jade green form the handle of this large calligraphy brush. With bristles made of horsehair held by a bone fastener, a calligraphy brush of this proportion is traditionally used for broad, gestural brushstrokes.

From the collection of Frances and Gary Comer.

“I am particularly fond of PAGODA RED as we have known the family for so long. Betsy is a professional in every way and her intelligent taste comes from a long line of family knowledge in the arts. She and her team are the very best to work with and we find treasures with every visit!”
