Hardwood Spindleback Bench

Dated to the early 20th century, this elegant two-person bench is an unusually wide variation of the traditional low-back armchair, also known as a rose chair. Considered an informal design, the rose chair was a lightweight, portable seating option used throughout the Qing-dynasty home, as well as in the entrances to official buildings. The rose chair was especially favored in regions with scenic landscapes and gardens, as the low back meant it could sit below a window without blocking the view.

Exquisitely crafted of a fine hardwood, this bench has a finely woven seat and an open frame patterned by characteristic support spindles along its back and sides. The frame has smooth, rounded edges intended to imitate bamboo furniture and decorative medallions enclosing stylized chrysanthemums and plum blossoms. These decorative elements combine with the clean lines of the angular frame for a design that is both traditional and timeless.
