This 19th-century chest created in Northern China started its life as a storage trunk with a solid lacquered front. Artisans, skilled in traditional Chinese carpentry and lacquer finishes, reconfigured it into a four-door chest with four drawers; brushing by hand additional coats of lacquer to achieve a variegated red with colored undertones from its past.
