Scholars' Root Pot

Brush pots and scroll pots carved to resemble tree trunks were popular during the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), and were among the many esteemed objects found in a traditional scholar’s studio. This early 19th-century scroll pot made of hand-carved root wood has an organic form that would have been used as a source of creative inspiration, calling to mind the complexities of nature.
