Bambara Style Ceremonial Mask

Depictions of humans in the ceremonial masks of the Bambara people are rare. The majority of their masks were carved to pay homage to the antelope, whose legendary spirit taught them to farm. Influences from that tradition are visible in the graceful curves of this helmet mask. The contrast between weathered browns and bone whites pattern and accentuate the balanced form of this sculptural object.
