Perfecting line and proportion, the simple design of this small locking chest celebrates the restraint of classic Chinese furniture forms. Crafted of elm (yumu) using mortise-and-tenon joinery, the square-corner cabinet is configured with two small doors that reveal an open interior and a hidden lower compartment. The chest is minimally decorated save for its black lacquer finish and the soft glimmer of its brass hinges and dagger-post lock. Dated to the 19th century, the locking chest is ideal today as a nightstand or side table, filled with a collection of contemporary art books or antique tomes.
