Three Panel Dragon Lattice Screen

A hallmark of Qing-dynasty domestic architecture, tall lattice panels such as these were used in provincial courtyard homes to allow light and air into a room whilst maintaining privacy. Linked by alternating hinges, lattice panels become a versatile way to partition sparsely furnished interiors into areas for eating, socializing, and resting.

This exceptional three panel folding screen goes beyond the purely functional with intricate pierced carvings and expansive lattice windows. The decorative carvings flanking the latticework depict archaistic dragons amidst swirling clouds, a classic motif of power and good fortune. Crafted of northern elm (yumu), the wooden screen has a beautifully aged finish, with warm coloring and smooth texture from a century of use.
