Its orange border still impressively vibrant, this 19th-century painted wood panel from northern China depicts a scene full of traditional Chinese symbolism. Surrounded by warriors poised for battle, five magpies hover mid-flight, arranged in the Chinese character for luck or blessing. A good omen in the midst of adversity, the magpies are carrying a pomegranate, a symbol of fertility and marital happiness. Auspicious bats mark each corner, bearers of happiness and longevity. Possibly bestowed as a gift to a recently married couple, this delicately painted panel is a beautiful example of Qing-dynasty art.
