During winter in the colder provinces of China, life revolved around the kang, a heated brick platform that household members would sit or recline upon. Placed on top of the kang, low tables provided a convenient surface for dining, drinking tea, or playing games.

This early 20th century kang table features a rectangular floating-panel top, a waisted apron with oblong cutouts, and short bowed legs at each corner. The apron is carved with cloud-form ruyi motifs that connect to a beaded edge running down each leg. A warm red lacquer finish decorates the exterior, now gently faded from a century of use.

From the collection of Frances and Gary Comer.

Lacquer has minor discoloration due to water and heat exposure.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
