Song Xin, "Subconscious Experience 01," 2018

Graduating from Beijing's Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in 1994 with a specialization in Chinese folk art, artist Song Xin uses the traditional craft of paper-cutting to challenge the viewer's social and political values. Elevating what is ordinarily considered a vernacular medium into a high art form, Song Xin draws inspiration from the material itself, capturing imagery from magazines and advertisements that mirror the world around her. In her work "Subconscious Experience 01," she highlights the subliminal effects of paper materials, assembling paper-cut fragments into a network of discreet connections.
