Entitled “Interloper,” this painting by Chicago artist Patrick Fitzgerald commemorates his childhood love of Japanese film and pop culture. Part of a “landscape conjured from memory,” the painting captures the thrill of his first encounters with foreign media, of expanding horizons yet threatening the familiar. As trepidation gave way to fixation, Fitzgerald himself became the interloper, intruding into a broader world of media. This eye-opening experience is depicted as a colorful horizon, the interloper gazing out towards the viewer in search of the new.

Oil, acrylic, and ink on cardboard. Mounted on a custom wood frame.
