The Baule people of Cote D'Ivoire were master craftspeople, especially notable for their richly polished woodworking. The elongated face of this monkey mask exhibits the striking sculptural results of those efforts. Monkey masks were used to ward off supernatural harm to the tribe. With deeply sunken eyes, pronounced ears, and elongated nose, brow, and snout it is easy to see the influence these African spiritual arts had on the European artists who would create the school of Expressionism.

What They're Saying

Elizabeth Krueger | Elizabeth Krueger Design

“PAGODA RED was extremely supportive in helping to pull accessory options together for the Lake Forest Showhouse. After providing them with details and our vision on how we were looking to finish our space, Laurene helped curate options that made it easy for us to edit and finalize. It's also no surprise that the unique pieces we used in our showhouse space were some of the first to sell.”
