Chicago-based artist Michael Thompson creates unique kites crafted from split bamboo frames covered with stretched muslin and a collage of vintage Asian ephemera—including fragments of fabric, scrolls, drawings, and books collected during his travels. In “Obscured Text V,” Thompson plays with the pictorial quality of Korean and Mandarin characters, obscuring and revealing hand-drawn calligraphy to dynamic visual effect. Language is imagined as pattern as pages of text are re-purposed as decoration, energizing the kite with the rhythmic movement of each brushstroke. Saturated with hues of pink and blue, the kite captivates with layered texture and depth of color.

Thompson has earned an international reputation for his kite works, an engrossing project initiated by the artist more than a decade ago.

“Over the years, I’ve incorporated many pieces from PAGODA RED into my designs. Not only can they balance new furnishings (and often new construction) by feeling more established, but the pieces emanate a sense of rich history, often leaving you wondering where they were in a previous life. These beautiful pieces carefully hand-selected by the team at PAGODA RED, coupled with their unbelievable customer service, make them a must-have for any home.”
