Unlike many African masks worn only by certain castes or secret societies, the karanga mask of the Mossi people of Burkina Faso is held within a patrilineal family line. Crafted in the northern Yatenga region, such masks provide a direct spiritual link between the wearer and their ancestors.

A recreation of those traditional designs, this wooden mask is carved with a simple oval face and an immense totem-like structure decorated with geometric patterns and a standing female figure. This carved figure represents a woman whose age and wisdom has raised her to the rank of a living ancestor, and designates this mask as one worn during the funerary rites of a revered woman.
